The Sponge Effect

The sponge effect is a phenomenon where a person absorbs knowledge from all the sources of his surrounding. It's a very helpful way to grow in your intellectual sense and make yourself wise.

Here are some ways through which you can bring this sponge effect into use in your own life.

  • Surround yourself with expert

Engage yourself with real sources and people of knowledge in the field in which you want to gain some knowledge, it's a lot more helpful than passive learning. Read books, watch interviews of the experts or listen to podcasts and there are many other ways where you can surround yourself with real experts by taking paid courses, attending seminars, and workshops.

  • Surround yourself with knowledge

Always surround yourself with knowledge related to the topic you want to gain information on. Make yourself available to the knowledge. You can gain knowledge from so many sources in your daily life. The best way to surround yourself with knowledge is to get addicted to it, try getting information while eating, walking, or sitting, and this is very easy as we live in a technology-driven world where information is available at our fingertips. You have your phone and you can seek the information whenever you want. For example, if you want to gain financial knowledge watch financial news, read business magazines, watch the videos of finance experts, or listen to finance podcasts and this can be done while eating, walking, or sitting.

  • Write down the information you learn in your own words

Getting information is easy nowadays, but retaining that information is tough. We consume lots of content and get access to lots of information on an everyday basis but we retain only a very little part of it which we don't often think about it consciously. So the best way to retain information and gain actual knowledge is to take an active part in learning. When you're getting some information make note of it, and write it down somewhere that way you'll understand it more clearly. After that class or lesson try writing down that piece of information in your word and see what you remember and this way you'll remember more of what you've learned and you'll remember it for a longer period. There is another benefit in writing that information like if in future if you forget it you can use that written information as a reference point to revise.

  • Dial in your focus

There are times when we are trying to learn something but we get submerged in that topic so deeply that we forget what was our starting point and get deflected from our topic at hand. This happens lots of times like when you're doing research for any topic on Wikipedia but then you open a linked document, then another, and another that way you actually forget what was your work, so always be specific in your work and be close to the topic. Stick to what you want to learn, and do not go off-topic so much that you lose your original focal point.

  • Read Books

Reading books is something which I would recommend to anyone out there who can just simply read because there are so many benefits of reading which you can't even think of. Reading a book is one of the best hobbies that I've inculcated and it's been proven to be very beneficial. Just think like this, an author writes a book in 2 or 3 years after so much research and hard work but when you read that book you get that 2-3 years' information in just 10-15 days and if you retain even 35% of it, then you're a lot more knowledgeable than what you were before reading that book. So start reading, and inculcate the habit of reading in your life.
